MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University blew a commanding lead before escaping University of Santo Tomas 71-68 to secure the last Final Four slot in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Forward Mark Belo led the way with 19 points for the Tamaraws, who almost lost despite leading by as much as 21 points.
The Growling Tigers started flat but gained steam as the game went on. Karim Abdul had 21 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for UST.
Belo, the versatile worker, sank two free throws to stretch FEU ‘s lead to three 71-68 with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Kevin Ferrer added 15 points but couldn’t get the potential game-tying three to go as time ran out on the defending national champion.
Bryan Cruz put the Tams back on top, 69-67, with 49.2 ticks left after playmaker John Sheriff briefly gave the lead to UST, 67-65, with 1:54 to go. Belo knotted the count at 67 at the 1:31 mark.
FEU arranged a date with NCAA champion San Beda while UAAP titlist De La Salle clashes with Southwestern University in the other semifinals matchup. The round-robin semis begins on Monday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
