Rookie leads Lady Tamaraws to rout Lady Warriors in UAAP volleyball

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University handily defeated University of the East, 25-14, 25-15, 25-11, Wednesday in the UAAP season 76 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

Bernadette Pons showed promise in her debut for the Lady Tamaraws, pacing all scorers with 10 points, all coming from hits.

“We expected that from her,” said coach Shaq Delos Santos, who returns to the women’s tournament after coaching University of Santo Tomas to a title in 2009.

“We’re just waiting for the consistency, not just from her but from the rest of the players. I want us to play at a high level because this is the UAAP.”

Geneveve Casugod had nine points, while Samantha Dawson and Mary Palma chipped in seven marks apiece as they combined for three of the Lady Tamaraws’ blocks.

FEU, the league’s winningest team which crashed out of the final four last year, had no troubles disposing off the hapless UE, pulling away early in each set.

“Top four, that’s our aim after missing it last year. We need to give the glory back to FEU,” he said.

The Lady Red Warriors, who were dead in season 75, just didn’t have the enough push to even threaten the Lady Tamaraws.

Sarina Bulan had six points for UE, while Shara Adorador added five.
