MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas cruised to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-15 win over University of the East Saturday in the UAAP season 76 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
After much resistance from UE, the Tigresses closed out the first set, 25-22, on two hits from Pam Lastimosa, which just zapped the life out of the Lady Warriors the rest of the way.
UST was never threatened from then on and improved to 2-1.
“We want to invest more wins as much as possible,” said head coach Odjie Mamon as his UST squad racked up its second straight win after an opening loss to La Salle.
Carmela Tunay led the Tigresses with 14 points, while rookie Ria Meneses, niece of PBA legend Vergel Meneses, contributed 11 points. Lastimosa added eight.
But Mamon admits that they are still looking for a leader to emerge from this squad, which crashed out of the final four last year for the first time in more than a decade.
“We’re looking for a leader. Right now, their moves and performance are still tentative,” Mamon said in Filipino.
The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, remain in search for their first victory here in season 76 as they dropped to 0-2.
Only Shaya Adorador barged into the double-digit scoring with 10, as the next best scorer for the Warriors was Angelica Dacaymat who only had four.
