NU blanks UST at UAAP women’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines — National University started the year the way it ended 2013: with a three-set win.

NU blanked University of Santo Tomas, 25-18, 25-13, 25-21, Saturday at the Arena in San Juan for a 4-1 card in the UAAP season 76 women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the Tigresses’ lacklustre performance and dominated early with a 2-0 set lead, before finishing off their opponents.

Dindin Santiago had 19 points for NU, while Mina Aganon added 14 points.

“We prepared well for this game. We don’t underestimate UST, so we prepared well them,” said the fifth year Aganon after the game in Filipino.

NU, after opening the third with a 9-4 lead, ran into trouble later in the set as UST finally came alive and worked to extend the match.

The Tigresses tied the match at 17, but Santiago and Aganon came to the Lady Bulldogs rescue and steered them out of danger.

“We just focused and tried to remember what we have been doing earlier, we just had to do it right. So we got the win,” Aganon also said.

Pam Lastimosa had 12 points for UST, but didn’t get enough support from teammates Chlodia Cortez and Carmela who combined only for 12 points.

NU is tied with Ateneo at second place while UST dropped to 2-3.
