Bulldogs, Tamaraws pull off contrasting wins in UAAP volleyball

MANILA, Philippines — National University and Far Eastern University pulled off contrasting victories Wednesday in the UAAP season 76 men’s volleyball tournament.

The league-leading Bulldogs stretched their unbeaten streak to six, clobbering University of the East, 25-16, 25-14, 25-22, at the Arena in San Juan.

Peter Torres and Edwin Tolentino each chipped in 10 points for NU, which peppered the Warriors with attacks.

No one from the winless UE side contributed double-digits in points with Angelone Soria leading with eight.

The second-running Tamaraws, meanwhile, had to jump through hoops to defeat University of the Philippines, 17-25, 25-16, 16-25, 25-22, 15-8.

Down 1-2, FEU got its act together in the fourth set before pulling away in the deciding set for improve to 5-1 in the standings.

Karl Ian Dela Calzada and Gregorio Dolor combined for 39 points for the Tamaraws, who had to subdue the Maroons’ tough blockers.

Four players wound up in double digits for UP, which had a huge edge in blocks, 15-2, but it wasn’t enough to bring them the win.
