REY MADRID has been named men’s basketball coach of the University of the Philippines following an interim stint in the last UAAP season.
League representative Ronnie Dizer, the dean of the UP College of Human Kinetics, said Madrid beat out eight candidates due to his “maturity” and the “creative mind to make the team play unconventional basketball.”
The Maroons dropped all 14 games last season where Madrid took over from the sacked Ricky Dandan midway in the eliminations.
“We’re realistic that it will take us two to three years to compete,” Dizer told the Inquirer yesterday. “We want to be the Fighting Maroons, but not at the expense of UP’s integrity.”
Meanwhile, Adamson stretched its sensational softball winning streak to 39 while Ateneo and National University shared second place in women’s volleyball in league action yesterday.
The Lady Falcons hammered out a 7-0 shutout of University of the Philippines to move within a win of a first-round sweep of the softball tournament at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Undefeated in the last four years, the Lady Falcons stayed solo on top at 5-0.
In women’s volleyball, the Lady Eagles and the Lady Bulldogs tote similar 5-1 records after pulling off contrasting victories at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Alyssa Valdez led the Lady Eagles to a grueling 15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13 triumph over University of Santo Tomas while towering sisters Dindin and Jaja Santiago combined for 29 points to lift the Lady Bulldogs, 25-17, 25-22, 25-14, over the Lady Maroons.
