Maroons rout Bulldogs in UAAP football

MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines put on a clinic against National University in a 5-1 rout Thursday in the UAAP season 76 men’s football tournament.

Carlos Monfort opened scoring for the Maroons in the 19th minute, then Jinggoy Valmayor doubled the lead in the 31st minute, connecting on an assist from Daniel Gadia.

Rookie Alfonso Ancheta later on nailed a booming strike from 35 meters in the 59th minute before Gadia capped the rout with goals in the 79th and 88th minutes for UP.

The Bulldogs’ lone goal came from newcomer Francis Abulan, pouncing on a goalkeeping blunder from Ace Villanueva and slotting it home in the 82nd.

The Maroons and the Green Archers are tied at 12 points, with UP holding on to second place with a higher goal differential.

Far Eastern University, which drew a bye at the start of the second round, is on top  with a maximum 18 points.

In the other games, De La Salle nipped University of Santo Tomas, 3-2, while titleholder Ateneo and University of the East battled to a 1-1 stalemate,
