Ateneo, La Salle score tight wins over separate foes in UAAP men’s volley

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo and La Salle scored triumphs over separate foes Sunday in the UAAP season 76 men’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

The Blue Eagles gained a piece of the second place after an intense 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-21 victory over Far Eastern University.

Marck Espejo, once again, topped all scorers with 23 points, four off blocks, for Ateneo while Red Intal and Ricci Gonzales combined for 21.

Ysrael Wilson Marasigan only had six points, but two of those went into clinching the momentum-swinging second set and the match.

FEU and Ateneo are in a tight race for an incentive come semifinals as they are knotted at 7-3 behind leader National University (8-1).

The Green Archers, meanwhile, closed in on University of Santo Tomas with a 17-25, 26-24, 27-25, 20-25, 15-9 win which locked both teams at 4-6.

Red Christensen wound up with 17 points for La Salle, while four others chipped in at least 10 points.

The Green Archers are on an uphill climb to the top four as they remained a game and half behind fourth-running Adamson (5-4).
