MANILA, Philippines – Former PBA sharpshooter Pido Jarencio has been named new head coach of the GlobalPort Batang Pier.

Jarencio made a name for himself as head coach in the collegiate ranks when he steered University of Santo Tomas to a Cinderella title run in the UAAP back in 2006 in his coaching debut before guiding the Growling Tigers to two more Finals appearances in 2012 and 2013.

“GlobalPort has finally made a decision to sign a long-term head coach in Pido. He will now be at the helm in the rebuilding of our team towards our long-term goal,” said team owner Mikee Romero in a statement Monday.

The 49-year-old Jarencio, who agreed to sign a two-year contract, replaced Richie Ticzon.

The Batang Pier made the quarterfinals as the seventh seed before being eliminated by No. 2 Rain or Shine in the 2014 Philippine Cup with Ticzon as interim coach.

GlobalPort, which has a good mix of young stars led by rookies Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia and battle-tested veterans in Sol Mercado and Erik Menk, hopes Jarencio would be the missing link to the franchise’s bid for a first-ever PBA championship.

Jarencio coached UST for eight years with the Tigers making the Final Four six times.
