UAAP women’s volley: Lady Bulldogs clinch twice-to-beat incentive

MANILA, Philippines — National University claimed the second twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinals of the UAAP season 76 volleyball tournament after a 25-17, 26-24, 25-13 win over University of the Philippines Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldogs needed to put on a tough stand against the Lady Maroons, especially in the second set, as they committed 18 miscues against nine.

But Dindin Santiago carried NU to the win with 18 points, while Jaja Santiago and Carmin Aganon chipped in 12 markers each.

With two games left in the elimination round, the Lady Bulldogs (11-1) believe they still have a lot to work on.

“We still want to improve, especially on our blocking and defense,” said head coach Edjet Mabbayad. “And we need to refine our setter.”

But NU has already a huge advantage coming into the next round, whether there will be a final four or not.

If La Salle sweeps the elimination round, the Lady Bulldogs still has a win-once edge in the step-ladder format.

“That’s a big thing for our morale knowing the opponent has to beat us twice. It’s a big help for our confidence,” said Mabbayad.

NU’s remaining assignments are Far Eastern University and La Salle.

The Lady Maroons, whose lone win in the tournament is against the winless University of the East, skid to 1-11.

Angeli Araneta topscored for UP with 10 points.
