UFL: Lee sparkles as Sparks prevail

MATCHES THURSDAY (Emperador Stadium)

7:30 p.m.—Global vs Pachanga PLDT Home Fibr

MANILA, Philippines — Korean winger Lee Joo Young delivered a virtuoso performance against his former team as the Loyola Meralco Sparks dumped defending champion Stallion, 3-1, Tuesday night in the United Football League at Emperador Stadium.

A member of the Stallion side that won two trophies last season, Lee scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and set up Phil Younghusband’s second that sealed the Sparks’ fifth straight victory.

Loyola temporarily moved six points clear at the top, with Global looking to cut the lead to three once again, when it faces Pachanga PLDT Home Fibr tonight.

“We started out flat,” said Santos. “But the guys showed character in the second half.”

Earlier, Green Archers United Globe, buoyed by a hattrick from Tating Pasilan, posted an emphatic 7-1 win over Socceroo for its first win in six matches.

Deployed as a striker after playing on the flanks for most of the season, Pasilan frolicked, scoring all of his three goals in a torrid second half showing.

Gabriel Olowoyeye tapped in the first goal to open the scoring for Archers, but it wasn’t until the second half that the floodgates opened with Jessie Martindale and Chieffy Caligdong also finding the back of the net.

Archers hiked their total to seven points, finally snapping out of a poor start that saw them drop 11 points from their first five matches.

Keeping his incredible scoring run going, Younghusband broke the deadlock in the 30th minute.
