MANILA, Philippines –The Philippines dropped a 2-1 decision to Hong Kong in their playoff for a Group 1 slot in the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania Zone on Saturday in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Marian Jade Capadocia and Clarice Patrimonio lost their singles matches but combined to win the doubles.
Although missing the services of world-ranked Fil-German Katharina Lehnert, the Filipinos improved on their fourth-place finish last year in the women’s version of the Davis Cup.
The Filipinos started off strong by routing Singapore (3-0) and Sri Lanka (3-0) to top their bracket. They then whipped Turkmenistan, 3-0, in the semifinals. Marc Anthony Reyes
