Army grabs V-League top spot, downs San Sebastian

MANILA—What was expected to be a tight duel turned into a rout as Army overwhelmed San Sebastian in four sets Thursday to gain the solo lead in the single round quarterfinals of the Shakey’s V-League Season 8 Open Conference at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Troopers came out with all guns ablaze beginning the second set to fashion out a 23-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-23 drubbing of the Lady Stags, whose seven-game winning run was stopped by the same team it outlasted in five sets two weeks ago.

Ateneo earlier boosted its bid for a place in the semifinals by coming from behind to down short-handed Navy, 13-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23.

Fille Cainglet tossed 21 points and Alyssa Valdez contributed 17 as the Lady Eagles avenged their elimination-round defeat and improved to 2-2 in the quarterfinals.

The loss left Navy in danger of missing out on the last four, after falling to 1-3.
