With a single uppercut, Marvin Sonsona, known for his sledgehammer punch as well as his partying binges, made an emphatic comeback Saturday night.
Sonsona unleashed a left uppercut 1:17 in the third round that knocked out former World Boxing Association junior featherweight champ Akifumi Shimoda to tag along with two other Filipinos who also scored KO wins at Cotai Arena of The Venetian Macao.
A former World Boxing Organization 122-pound titlist, Sonsona’s spectacular shot left the Japanese unconscious on the canvas and ignited early Knockout of the Year buzz.
Already, Top Rank boss Bob Arum was reportedly eyeing more stints for the 23-year-old.
The 23-year-old Sonsona is now 18-1-1 with 15 knockouts.
Jerwin Ancajas and Harmonito dela Torre also hacked out impressive wins. Ancajas slammed Thai Inthanon Sithchamuang in the second round, while Dela Torre downed Indonesian Yakobus Heluka in the first round. Marc Anthony Reyes
