MANILA, Philippines —La Salle bagged its fourth straight women’s championship as Far Eastern University reclaimed the men’s crown in the UAAP chess tournament over the weekend at Enrique Razon Sports Center in Manila.
The Lady Woodpushers amassed 44 points, capped by a 4-0 shutout of Ateneo last Saturday and a 2.5-1.5 victory over runner-up University of the Philippines.
Still at the forefront of La Salle’s dominant campaign, Jan Jodilyn Fronda copped her third MVP plum as the Lady Woodpushers also unveiled a promising find in Bernadette Galas, who won the top rookie award.
The Lady Maroons wound up six points behind the Lady Woodpushers with 38 points. In the men’s division, the Tamaraws returned to the top after securing a 39.5 point-total behind MVP Kevin Mirano.
Adamson had 33.5 points to finish second to the Tamaraws, who surprisingly lost the title to University of Santo Tomas last year after reigning for six straight seasons.
National University ruled the juniors event with 34 points, while the Baby Tamaraws settled for second with 31.
Other individual winners were NU’s Austin Literatus (men’s top rookie) and Jayson Danday (juniors top rookie) and Adamson’s Daryl Unix Samantila (juniors MVP).
