Cebu boxers dominate Abap tilt
MAASIN, Leyte—Cebu boxers shone in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 PLDT-Abap Visayas Area boxing tournament at the Maasin City gym here Friday.
Junior pinweight (46kg) Rimon Rama and Youth lightweight (60kg) Vicente Casido of the fabled ALA Gym posted 3-0 wins over their respective opponents while Marvin Pomar of Cebu City sealed a semifinal clash with Rama with the same 3-0 victory.
Rama was quick and steady in ousting Jerry Mae Pandac of the Leyte Sports Academy (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) while the tall and rangy Casido leaned on his crisp jab-straight combinations and tough defense to eliminate local boy Javier Alemar of Maasin City Team A (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).
Pomar proved too much for Mateo Maquiling of Southern Leyte (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
Maasin City Team B’s Shaquel Miole was also impressive in a 3-0 (30-27; 30-27; 30-27) win over Raymart Alara of Bago City in the Junior pinweight division.
Rama and Pomar will fight for a place in the gold medal round while Miole will face Romie Evale of Maasin City Team A for the other title. Evale took a bye in the quarterfinal round.
The day’s shortest victory belonged to Leo Domingo Napuli of Maasin City Team B as he forced Edu Kuizon of Southern Leyte Team B to retire before the end of the first round.
