MANILA, Philippines — Fresh from the international break, Loyola Meralco and Global rekindle their rivalry in a battle of United Football League powerhouses Saturday night at Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
With star striker Phil Younghusband already recovered from an ankle injury, the Sparks, four points ahead of Global at the top of the table, target a repeat of their first round conquest of the 2012 champions in the 8:30 p.m. duel.
Younghusband played the full 90 minutes for the national team in a 0-1 loss to Azerbaijan Wednesday in Dubai.
“I think the two matches for the Azkals helped me recover my fitness,” said Younghusband, who also saw action in the scoreless draw against Malaysia.
James Younghusband remains doubtful for the Sparks also due to an injury, but coach Vincent Santos still has plenty of options with Lee Joo Young and Boyet Canedo expected to be fit for battle.
Global unveiled four new players to beef up its roster for the second round onwards in Filipino midfielder Curt Dizon, Filipino-Japanese prospect Daisuke Sato and Mexicans Raul Martinez and German Rodriguez.
“It’s a good mix that we have and I think we’re right on track (of our goals) this season,” said Global coach Leigh Manson at the press conference launching the club’s linkup with local sportswear firm Atleta.
The Sparks prevailed, 4-0, in their first round clash last January, but Global has picked up its form, losing just once in their next nine matches to stay within striking distance of the leaders.
In the earlier kickoff at 6:15 p.m., Army-General Trias seeks to move up to fifth spot when it battles Team Socceroo.
