Fajardo doubtful vs Slaughter, Ginebra

MANILA, Philippines — The much-awaited clash between the league’s two giants in Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s Greg Slaughter and San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo may likely have to wait once more.

Fajardo’s status for the 5:15 p.m. game Sunday has been ruled as a “game-time decision” as per the Beermen’s active consultant Todd Purves.

“He’s a game-time decision but I doubt it,” said Purves. “It’s the second game of the season. As much as the fans want to see him and as much as I want to see him play, I will be cautious.”

The six-foot-10 Fajardo, who was adjudged Best Player of the Conference last February, missed San Miguel Beer’s opening game in the 2014 Commissioner’s Cup last Friday due to a sprained left ankle. The Beermen beat the Meralco Bolts, 94-76.

“I know he’ll beg me to let him play but I want what’s best for him,” added Purves.

Fajardo also missed the Christmas Day meeting between the two teams after sustaining a sprained ACL in his right knee.

The two young big men have been long-time rivals dating back to their college days when both led their respective teams in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) before the seven-foot Slaughter transferred to Ateneo.

Barring any setbacks to his recovery, Purves said Fajardo will play on Friday against Talk ‘N Text.
