MANILA, Philippines — John Vincent Gallego exploded for 32 points as Chiang Kai Shek College stunned National University, 88-80, Sunday to capture the Division I championship of the 2014 Seaoil NBTC League National High School Finals at Ynares Sports Arena.
Gallego drilled 11 straight points in a pivotal fourth-quarter stretch before the Blue Dragons clinched it with an 8-0 finish in the final two minutes.
“We didn’t expect (to win) because they (Bullpups) are the UAAP champions, but we really worked hard for it,” said Gallego, the junior guard who also copped the league’s Most Outstanding Player award.
Mohammad Salim added 21 points and Shannon Gagate had 10 for the Blue Dragons.
Earlier, Mark Bondoc came out with a huge game to power University of Assumption-Pampanga past San Benildo-Antipolo, 79-69, for the Division II title.
Bondoc finished with 20 points, 20 rebounds, four assists and four blocks to lead the come-from-behind victory by the UA Pelicans.
In the All-Star match, Seaoil Extreme, bannered by the stars of NCAA titlist San Beda, rolled past Seaoil Mako, 123-94.
Diego Miguel Dario led Seaoil Extreme with 18 points. The 15-year-old Gallego also landed a spot in the Mythical Team along with Salim, NU’s Hubert Cani, Huasiong College-Iloilo’s John Paul Calvo and Sacred Heart School-Cebu’s Felixberto Jaboneto.
John Paul Cauilan fired 23 points to pace the Bullpups, who were unbeaten in nailing the UAAP juniors title last year.
Gallego canned four straight free throws after Cani got slapped with personal and technical fouls to put the Blue Dragons ahead, 80-78.
Salim shot four of the Blue Dragons’ last eight points as the Bullpups wound up scoreless in the final two minutes.
“It was a difficult win because we were up against the best in the nation,” said CKSC coach Goldwin Monteverde.
