MANILA, Philippines — Three players led by newly installed skipper Jason de Jong knocked in two goals each as a ruthless Global side drubbed Army-General Trias, 9-1, Thursday night at Emperador Stadium in Taguig to stay within striking distance of leader Loyola Meralco in the United Football League.
Frolicking in his new attacking midfield role, De Jong scored twice in quick succession in the second half and also assisted on another goal as Global repeated the first-round scoreline against a listless Army side.
Izo El Habbib, making his first start of the season, set the tone for the rout with a powerful header in the 12th minute and a composed finish just before halftime.
Mark Hartmann came off the bench to score twice, hiking his total to a league-leading 14 goals this season, while Jeffrey Christiaens, Charles Pettys and new recruit Nap Bustillo also found the back of the net.
“There was a moment in the second half where I felt we were absolutely unstoppable,” said Global coach Leigh Manson, whose team now has 28 points, just a point behind Loyola.
“Normally I play in front of the defense, but I also told the coach I have qualities to bomb forward and I showed it today,” said De Jong.
Earlier, Diego Barrera tormented his former club with a hat-trick as Team Socceroo fought back from two goals down to stun Stallion Gilligan’s, 4-3.
Goals from Ruben Doctora Jr. and new signing Masood Shadideh gave Socceroo a comfortable lead at halftime before Barrera spearheaded the comeback. Socceroo improved to nine points in 12 matches.
