National Geographic Channel launches 5th Earth Day Run

MANILA, Philippines – National Geographic Channel (NGC) on Monday, March 17, launched the 5th year of its ‘Earth Day Run’. Scheduled April 27, 2014, the event with a new advocacy is expected to gather 12,000 running enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels.

Runners who will join may choose from a total of five categories–3K, 5K, 10K, 21K and the newest addition to the list, the 42K category, which is designed to draw the most physically fit and expert runners in the country.

The advocacy

From the plantation of worth P1 million fruit-bearing trees in the Abuan watershed, Isabela last year, NGC together with its environmental partner, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), aims to raise money for the ‘Bancas For The Philippines’ project this 2014.

The ‘Bancas For The Philippines’ project by WWF endeavors to train fishermen of Palawan affected by Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful typhoon for 2013 (https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/522021/yolanda-is-most-powerful-typhoon-for-2013-weather-experts) which hit the country November last year. The training will cover the creation and use of fiberglass boats for artisanal fishing.

These fiberglass boats are designed to withstand the onslaught of typhoons and while it is durable, the use of this material is also expected to benefit nature as it will help decrease the consumption of sawn timber and plywood.

The fishermen will also be taught climate-smart technology that will help them recover their livelihood as well as decrease the fishing pressure on the seas.

Registration

Registration fees for the #NatGeoRun2014 categories are as follows: P550 for 3K, P650 for 5K, P750 for 10K, P950 for 21K, and P1,500 for 42K.

Participants can support the Haiyan rehabilitation efforts of NGC and WWF by signing up on www.natgeorun.com or visiting the sign-up booth at the Lower Ground floor of SM Aura from March 1 to April 20.
