Filipino-American Treat Huey and Indian partner Somdev Devvarman pulled off a 6-3, 6-4 upset over 14th seeds Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank of Argentina Saturday to make the doubles third round of the US Open in New York.
Outplaying the Argentines in practically all aspects of the one-hour, six-minute match, Huey and Devvarman reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since teaming up.
Chela and Schwank made the doubles semifinals of last year’s Wimbledon. Schwank reached the finals of this year’s French Open and semis of last year’s US Open with a different partner, while Chela reached a career-high 15th in the world in doubles.
Huey and Devvarman, both from University of Virginia, face a tougher assignment next as they square off against Indian fourth seeds Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes.
Bhupati and Paes ousted Florian Mayer and Rogier Wassen, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Bhupati won the US Open doubles in 2002 with another partner, while Paes was US Open doubles champion in 2006 and 2009 in mixed doubles.
Huey and Devvarman struck with three winners against the Argentines’ one, and also had more aces (3-1). Making two of three break point opportunities as against their opponents’ 0-of-3, Huey and Devvarman also won 61 points compared to their foes’ 49.
