All PH bets tumble out of Lancer tennis
MANILA, Philippines — Now they’re gone.
The last of the remaining Filipinos in the singles draw, Monica Therese Cruz, Maia Bernadette Balce and Chrislyn Colleen Sioson, also bowed out Wednesday in the Mitsubishi Lancer international junior tennis championships at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Cruz, one of the two locals who drew byes to the second round, took a 6-2, 6-1 beating from 13th seed Maddison Inglis of Australia. Balce was no match for the powerful 15-year-old Raveena Kingsley of the United States, 6-0, 6-1, before Chrislyn Colleen Sioson absorbed a 6-0, 6-0, loss to No. 2 Greetje Minnen.
Article continues after this advertisementSioson was the only Filipino to post a victory this season, stunning American Samantha Gozalo, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6), in the first round. The rest didn’t survive the brutal first round, including top bet Alberto Lim Jr.
Some locals will be around until the weekend with the doubles set late in the week.
Meanwhile, top boys’ seed Harry Bourchier of Australia breezed to the third round after ousting Joshua Liu of Singapore, 6-1, 6-1.
