MANILA, Philippines — Philab shut out Philippine Navy, 5-0, to launch its bid for another title in the PSC Commissioners’ Cup baseball championship Saturday at Rizal Memorial Baseball Park.
Ateneo, last year’s Chairman’s Classic third placer, demolished Dragons, 14-4, while Arnel Arrieta banged in the winning RBI that lifted Rizal Technological to a scrambling 9-8 win over University of the Philippines after 11 innings.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia made the ceremonial pitch to open the event along with tournament director Arsenic Laurel and Chairman’s Classic MVP Matt Laurel.
The champions in the last Chairman’s Classic, the Philab Ballbusters, bannered by former national clouters, simply proved too classy for the Navymen.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Arrieta slammed a hit to deep center to lift RTU, the perennial SCUAA champion.
