MANILA, Philippines — Angelo Que and Rufino Bayron—both coming off huge final-round collapses—will be looking to atone themselves when the ICTSI Camp John Hay Championship fires off Wednesday in Baguio City.
Que, who let the Asian Tour’s Solaire Open slip off his hands two weeks ago, and Bayron, who couldn’t handle the intense pressure in Tagaytay last Saturday, are ready to put behind those debacles at the up-and-down course.
Ahead by one shot going into the final round, Que threw it all away in one hole—a 12 on the par-5 second—en route to an 82 that allowed Canadian Richard Lee to wrest the title.
Bayron, meanwhile, blew a seven-stroke lead right into the first nine at Splendido to prolong his search for a breakthrough title.
The duo is among a crack field of participants seeking the P360,000 champion’s purse.
At the forefront is defending champion Jay Bayron, who has momentum going into the 72-hole event.
Aided by that meltdown of younger brother Rufino, Jay rallied from nine shots down to snatch the ICTSI Splendido Classic title.
Jay’s victory last year was made possible by a brilliant 59 that tied Miguel Tabuena in regulation play.
He beat Tabuena in the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. The foreign contingent include Canadian Rick Gibson, the 2002 Philippine Open titlist.
