SWU repulses resilient SLU
MANILA, Philippines — Cebu-based Southwestern University outlasted a gritty St. Louis U of Baguio, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 21-25, 19-17, Tuesday night to gain a share of the early lead in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Cobras proved equal to every challenge in a nip-and-tuck final set, erasing two match points before guest player Lutgarda Malaluan delivered two vital hits to seal the victory in a little over two hours.
With the victory, the Lady Cobras joined the Ateneo Lady Eagles at the top of Group A of the 12-team tournament.

“I’m just glad the younger players rose to the challenge.” This early, the Lady Cobras are on track of redeeming themselves after a forgettable 2012 campaign where they finished in last place.
Later, Far Eastern U hacked out a 25-21, 20-25, 25-11, 25-20 triumph over San Sebastian in a battle of Group B contenders. Bernadette Pons came away with 20 points as the Lady Tamaraws came up with a resounding response after dropping the second set.

Malaluan finished with 15 points while Marlyn Llagoso came away with 19 hits, including 10 kills and eight blocks, and Sheena Quino and Janelle Cabahug each delivered 12 hits for the Lady Cobras, who face Arellano on Thursday.
Krissian Tsuchiya paced the Lady Navigators with a game-high 26 hits, including 22 attacks only to fade in the final set.
St. Louis also drew 13 and 10 hits, respectively, from Colleen Rossi and Roxanne Almonte.
