MANILA, Philippines — Rizal Technological University overwhelmed Batangas State University, 12-0, to take the early lead while University of Santo Tomas debuted on a winning note against Adamson, 5-2, Tuesday in the PSC Commissioners’ Cup baseball championship at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Jhon Christopher Leis fanned out seven batters and yielded six hits in a no-relief job, while Justin Payongayong and Arnel Arieta starred in a six-run sixth inning for the Blue Thunder in the match halted after six innings under the 10-run mercy rule.
It was the second straight win for RTU which pulled in six runs in the sixth as Payongayong and Arieta made run-scoring hits and the Red Blades’ defense crumbled under a maze of errors.
The Tigers punctuated their debut with three runs in the fifth inning as they pinned a second successive defeat on the Falcons.
In the third game, John Christopher Pantan blasted a two-run double in the eighth inning as University of the Philippines edged Philippine Navy, 8-7.
Pantan slammed a fast ball to left field in the drizzle to cap the Maroons’ first win in two games while handing the Navymen their second straight defeat.
