MANILA, Philippines–The Filipinos’ unparalleled passion for basketball is known worldwide, and we now have a Guinness World Record to show for it.
The Philippines now officially owns the record for the longest basketball game ever played after 120 hours, 1 minute and seven seconds — equivalent to five days — of non-stop hoops at the Meralco Gym in Ortigas
The 24-man crew had actually shattered the United States’ record of 112 hours and 13 seconds on Friday night, but managed to push it further for eight more hours. The Americans broke the previous record (110) by mere two hours.
After careful review of its strict guidelines, Guinness representative Turath Alsaraf confirmed the feat and presented the certification to Basketball Marathon Philippines crew noon on Saturday.
Team Bounce Back wound up ahead with 16, 783 points, while Team Walang Iwanan finished with 16,732.
Proceeds of the Basketball Marathon 2014, through Gawad Kalinga’s OPLAN Walang Iwanan, will go to building 22 houses and a basketball court in the Visayas.
