MANILA, Philippines — Seasoned mentor Derrick Pumaren was officially named the new head coach of University of the East on Thursday.
Pumaren, who is replacing Boycie Zamar, conducted his first practice with Red Warriors this morning with only a few months to go before the new UAAP season.
The former UE Red Warrior was ultimately chosen because of his full commitment to the team. Zamar was sacked late last month for his multiple obligations with other squads like PBA’s San Miguel and D-League’s Cebuana Lhuillier.
“Coach Derrick committed full time to coaching the Red Warriors,” said Carmelita Mateo, UAAP Season 77 President and UE’s Executive Vice President, in a statement.
Before this head coaching stint, Pumaren has served as a consultant for the Red Warriors for several times in the previous years. He also coached La Salle in the UAAP in the late 80s before mentoring several squads in the PBA.
UE failed to reach the final four last year with a 7-7 record.
