Shakey’s V-League: Lady Falcons claw from two set deficit to nip Lady Chiefs

MANILA, Philippines—Adamson clawed back from two sets down and pulled through with a 17-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-19, 15-11 over Arellano on Thursday in the 11th Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference.

The Lady Falcons owned six of the last eight points in the tense fifth set to earn them the quarterfinals spot and blemish the Lady Chiefs’ record in group A.

Second stringers Amanda Maria Villanueva and Ma. Erika Gel Alkuino scored key hits in the last three, while Sheila Pineda, and Pau Soriano provided bulk of the firepower for Adamson.

“They really stepped up big for us,” said Adamson coach Sherwin Meneses in Filipino of her reserve players.

Shiela Pineda finished with 21 points while former ace spiker Pau Soriano returned with a solid 18-hit showing.  Thai guest player Pacharee Sangmuang chippined in 15 markers.

Villanueva had nine hits while Alkuino, meanwhile, added two markers and a number of hustle plays for Adamson, which streaked to its third straight win.

The Lady Chiefs, who had already gained a seat in the playoffs with a sweep of their first four games, closed out the elims with 4-1 card.

Danna Henson also had 21 points to lead the Arellano, which still is on top of its group despite the setback, while Menchie Tubiera added 17 points.
