V-League: UST zeroes in on 2nd quarterfinal berth
MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas, drawing firepower from rookie Ennajie Laure, turned back San Sebastian, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14, 25-20, Sunday night to close in on the second quarterfinal berth in Group B of the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Laure sustained her superb showing with a 16-point performance even as the Tigresses brandished another strong defensive effort to improve to 2-1 for second spot behind unbeaten National U.
It was on the defensive end that the Tigresses bared their fangs, coming up with a tournament-high 15 blocks even as Marivic Meneses and Pam Lastimosa combined for 26 hits.
Article continues after this advertisementAce spiker Gretchel Soltones returned to the Lady Stags’ fold after a two-game absence but managed just nine hits as San Sebastian dropped to 1-3.
Hardly showing sign of her injury, Soltones got away with 35 attempts, but finished with just eight kills.
The league resumes Sunday with Davao debuting against Far Eastern in the 2 p.m. opener.
