MANILA, Philippines — We will bring back the old dance.
That’s the promise of the father, trainer and namesake of three-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr., as they plunge into the most critical phase of their training for his May 31 featherweight title fight.
Donaire Sr., back as his son’s head trainer following years of estrangement, said he noticed several things missing from the fighter’s arsenal: Head movements as he pursues opponent, punching combinations and dancing.
“He’s not dancing anymore, that’s what we want to bring back,” Donaire Sr., said in Filipino.
“We are working on it. I’d like him to come back like the young Nonito. Fortunately, he’s quick to remember those movements.”
The elder Donaire said those are the keys against South African WBA champion Simpiwe Vetyeka who, as he observed, moves well and throws punches on the fly.
Donaire is going for his first title in 126 against Vetyeka who emerged from the fringes after dealing Indonesian legend Chris John his first ever loss last year.
Donaire ditched Trainer of the Year awardee Robert Garcia for this fight.
The arrangement might be a permanent, considering the coach’s recent falling out with Top Rank.
Team Donaire is wrapping up its training in Cebu and will fly back to Manila to resume its preparation at Elorde Center in Sucat.
