Made even more dominant by the return of Jaja Santiago, the Lady Bulldogs never let the Lady Chiefs gain momentum and cruised to a 2-0 record in the quarters, counting their win against groupmate Far Eastern University in the elimination round.
Jaja and older sister Dindin lead NU’s unforgiving attack with 12 points apiece, Carmin Aganon added 10 while Myla Pablo and Aiko Urdas had nine each.
“We had a good performance compared to our last game. It’s an important victory,” said coach Ariel Dela Cruz, whose squad needs another win to assure itself a semis berth.
Dela Cruz commended the presence of libero Jen Reyes and veteran guest player Ruby De Leon, giving the Lady Bulldogs the depth that would’ve made a difference in the UAAP.
“They fill up our weakness in reception and setting, which we were lacking in the UAAP,” Dela Cruz added.
Reyes had seven excellent digs, while De Leon turned in 26 excellent sets for NU, which shoots for the semis against St. Benilde on May 8 in Group 2.
The NCAA finalists, meanwhile, dropped to 1-1, but remained in the running for at least a playoff berth if they get past FEU in their May 6 clash.
Danna Henson, the Lady Chiefs’ top scorer, was held to three markers while Menchie Tuberia led all of their scorers with five measly points.
