Philippine Superliga serves up 2nd season

MANILA, Philippines — Debuting squad Air Asia poses as a threat to Philippine Army’s reign when the second season of the Philippine Superliga fires off on May 16 at Cuneta Astrodome.

The Lady Troopers, who bagged the Invitational and Grand Prix titles last year, face tough competition against the Air Asia team built around La Salle volleyball star Aby Maraño.

PSL President Ramon “Tats” Suzara said the fledgling league will introduce the All-Filipino Conference, which will replace last year’s Invitational tournament.

“The Philippine Superliga now stands on a more solid ground after two highly successful conferences last year,” said Suzara of the club tournament organized by Sportscore.

Maraño, picked second overall in last month’s inaugural draft, will be reunited with former La Salle teammates Cha Cruz and Melissa Gohing and coach Ramil de Jesus.

Petron has been similarly tagged as a contender after acquiring No. 1 draft pick and National University star Dindin Santiago.

Also out to challenge Army’s dominance are Cignal, the runner-up for two conferences, PLDT MyDSL, RC Cola and Cagayan Province.

In men’s action, Men’s Grand Prix champion PLDT MyDSL will be tested by two more teams with the addition of Cignal and Instituto Estetica Manila this season.
