BACOLOD—Ceres-La Salle FC begins Tuesday the daunting task of giving the Philippines a first crack at the final round of the AFC President’s Cup against the team considered as the strongest in the tournament.
The reigning national titlist from Bacolod sets out as the underdog in the 5 p.m. match against Rimyongsu of North Korea, kicking off Group B hostilities at Panaad Stadium here.
Chinese Taipei side Tatung clashes with HTTU Asgabat of Turkmenistan at 7:30 p.m. to cap the opening schedule of the four-team group, where only the top two advance to the finals late this year.
Ceres shored up its backline by acquiring, just for the tournament, national team goalkeeper Ed Sacapano, Fil-Spanish defender Juani Guirado and Jason Sabio.
Patrick Reichelt and Carli de Murga will also provide Ceres the experience, having played for Global in last year’s President’s Cup in Cebu.
“The team has prepared long and hard for the tournament,” said Ceres owner Leorey Yanson.
“Hosting the President’s Cup is a huge honor for the province, but we also want to bring pride and honor by doing well in this tournament.”
Rimyongsu boasts of players who played in the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup as well as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
