Fueled by a strong opening period, the Red Lions had no problems pulling away from the Pirates, whom San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez sees as one of their toughest opponents in the coming NCAA season.
“We’re happy we passed Lyceum. They are one of the strong teams in the NCAA. They have a good coach and a good crop of players,” Fernandez said.
Art Dela Cruz led the Red Lions’ attack with 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists while Ola Adeogun added 16 points and 11 boards.
San Beda tied with likewise undefeated Far Eastern University on top of group B.
The Pirates, meanwhile, absorbed their second defeat despite a 26-point effort from new Cameroonian reinforcement Guy Mbida.
Mbida, who knocked down all four of Lyceum’s triples, got little back-up from his teammates as Joseph Gabayani came in as the next best scorer with eight.
