Filoil caging: SWU’s King Cobra strikes

MANILA, Philippines — Landry Sanjo has emerged a vital cog in Southwestern University’s promising start in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.

The 6-foot-7 Cameroonian was acclaimed Purefoods Best Player of the Week for leading the Cebu-based Cobras to a pair of thrilling victories over the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers and the University of Perpetual Help Altas.

Sanjo tallied an average of 17 points and 10.5 rebounds on top of four blocks and an assist in both games for the Cobras, who turned back the Bombers, 72-68, then survived the Altas, 79-77.

After their Manila stint, the Cobras return to Cebu to play four matches against UAAP champion La Salle and University of the East, and Cesafi rivals University of San Carlos and University of Visayas from May 21 to 25.

It marks the first series of road games for the league.

Sanjo joined Perpetual’s Harold Arboleda, UP’s JR Gallarza, NU’s Alfred Aroga and Letran’s Kevin Racal in the Gatorade Best Five while Delmar Mahaling of Holy Trinity College was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Meanwhile, College of St. Benilde defeated Holy Trinity College of General Santos City, 106-92, Sunday at Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong City. June Navarro
