MANILA, Philippines — Joseph Gabayani gave Lyceum a lift off the bench as the Pirates overwhelmed the Philippine Youth U-18 team, 89-67, in the 2014 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Monday at the Arena in San Juan.
Gabayani scored a team-high 18 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds in just 17 minutes.
Pirates’ starting backcourt of Dexter Zamora and Shane Ko also did their damage. Zamora had 16 points while Ko chipped in with 13.
Andrei Caracut carried much of the load offensively for the young Nationals, who were without Thirdy Ravena and head coach Jamike Jarin, with a game-high 23 points.
Lyceum improved to 3-2 good for third in Group B behind unbeaten league-leaders Far Eastern University and San Beda.
The U-18 squad suffered its fourth defeat in as many games. Henry Asilum added 12 points for the Youth team, which had 13 turnovers and just eight assists.
