MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Azkals only needed a draw to advance into the semifinals of the AFC Challenge Cup. But clearly, they wouldn’t settle for such after hammering out a 2-0 shutout over Turkmenistan Friday night (Manila time) at the National Stadium in Maldives.
The Philippines, which will face Maldives in the semifinals on Tuesday, also topped Group B with 7 points after dragging a tough Afghanistan side to a scoreless draw last Tuesday and scoring a 2-0 win over Laos on Thursday.
Phil Younghusband opened up the scoring for the Azkals after he found the back of the net off a free kick in the 49th minute before Patrick Reichelt padded onto the lead in the 72 minute.
