Strong end to Maroons Filoil stint as they rout Generals
MANILA, Philippine—University of the Philippines ended its pre-season campaign strong with a convincing 72-59 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College Wednesday in the 2014 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
Four players finished in double digits for the Maroons in their second victory with Cris Vito leading the way with 15 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.
Dave Moralde, a transferee from San Beda, also came alive in UP’s decisive 24-12 fourth quarter run to finish with 12 points and five rebounds.
Article continues after this advertisementUP also outrebounded EAC, 56-50, with Mark Juruena plucking whopping 22 boards for the Maroons.
“I hope everybody could see the type of game were developing, it’s ‘small-ball’,” said coach Rey Madrid. “We’re small, so we get to neutralize the opponents’ size with much play, effort, and pace.”
“We always lose to EAC (in the pre-season tournament). It’s a big improvement for us that we finally get win against them.”
Article continues after this advertisementThe Maroons, who will plunge back into action when the UAAP opens in July, concluded their Filoil stint with a 2-4 record while NCAA mainstay EAC dropped to an identical card.
The Generals staved off a blowout in the first three quarters but could not keep up in the payoff period as the turnovers continued to come.
Ariel Aguilar finished with 11 points as three others finished in double digits for EAC while Sydney Onwubere had nine points and seven rebounds.
