Centro Escolar University and Southwestern University made it as unlikely semifinalists after drubbing separate opponents yesterday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
The CEU Scorpions overwhelmed Lyceum, 64-51, to stretch their unbeaten run to seven games in their knockout quarterfinal match at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Rodel de Leon fired 14 points to pace the Scorpions in the one-sided duel where they raced to a double-digit lead, 22-12, right in the first quarter.
The SWU Cobras also came out in full control by the second half to drub Jose Rizal U, 65-57, in the other quarterfinal match.
Landry Sanjo powered the Cebu-based Cobras with 19 points, 19 rebounds and four assists. Mac Tallo also shone with a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards.
Quarterfinal action wraps up tomorrow with the winner in the 2 p.m. battle between UAAP champion La Salle and Far Eastern U advancing against the Cobras.
Four-time NCAA titlist San Beda and National U tangle at 4 p.m. with the survivor taking on the Scorpions in the semis.
Mon Abundo added 12 points for the Scorpions, while African big man Rodrigue Ebondo collected 11 points and 11 rebounds.
“This win is for all Cebuanos,” said SWU coach Yayoy Alcoseba.
