The 22nd Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship (SNYACC) gets going this month, aiming to discover more talented young Filipinos with its new six-leg format.
The tournament, which added an elimination round in Cagayan de Oro, is divided into the Kiddies (7 to 14-year-olds) and Juniors (15 to 20-year-olds) categories. Registration is ongoing.
SNYACC eliminations will be held in the National Capital Region this weekend at SM Megamall; Northern and Southern Luzon on June 21 and 22 in SM City Batangas; Visayas on July 12 and 13 in SM City Consulation, Cebu; and Mindanao on Aug. 2 in SM City Cagayan de Oro and Aug. 30 and 31 in SM City Davao.
Tournament head Alex Dinoy said that instead of having two gender divisions, boys and girls will compete against each other.
“We hope to see more female talents advance to the finals,” Dinoy said during Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.
Shell social investment manager Jackie Ampil said the event also help participants score scholarships with their talents.
“Chess has nothing to do with fuel, but it’s one of our commitments to social development and a response to nation building,” said Ampil. Vinz Luanne Lamorena, Contributor
