MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo, who paces the statistical race for Best Player of the Conference in the ongoing PBA Governors’ Cup, also finds himself on top of the MVP ladder.
Fajardo, the six-foot-10 sophomore, averaged 43.8 statistical points in Governors’ Cup and 37.6 overall including his Philippine Cup stint where he was named BPC.
The 24-year-old Gilas Pilipinas mainstay though, just couldn’t will the Beermen past the quarterfinals after they got booted out by the Grand Slam seeking San Mig Coffee Mixers Tuesday night that may hamper his chances of claiming the top individual award.
Aside from the statistical points, votes from the media, players and the league office are also part of the BPC and MVP selection process.
Coming in second to Fajardo, is the oldest player in the league Asi Taulava of Air21 with 32.0 SPs.
The 41-year-old Taulava, who’s turning back the clock norming 18.1 points and 12.8 rebounds per game this conference, is also second to the Cebuano center in the Governors’ Cup BPC race with 37.9 SPs.
Talk ‘N Text’s Jayson Castro, the Commissioner’s Cup BPC, is in third with a 31.4 SPs average while Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s Greg Slaughter, the only rookie in the Top 30 players in the running for MVP, (30.8) and Fajardo’s teammate and reigning MVP Arwind Santos wound up the top five.
Fajardo leads all locals in points (21.8) and rebounds (16.0) and is tied with Slaughter in blocks (1.4).
