Valdez celebrates birthday with Ateneo win over PNP

MANILA, Philippines — Alyssa Valdez led the way as Ateneo opened up its Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Open Conference campaign with quick work of Philippine National Police, 25-15, 25-12, 25-21, Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Valdez led all scorers with 19 points, 18 coming off kills, while Michelle Morente added 13.

“What a way to celebrate my day [playing] volleyball,” the beaming Valdez, who turned 21 Sunday, said. “Volleyball has always been here for me.”

“The gifts made me feel special. I feel overwhelmed. I’m just playing volleyball and they see me this way,” said Valdez of the reception she got from his growing fans.

Valdez is also satisfied with the performance of her rookie teammates.

“I’m happy with their performance. They are also jelling well with the team.”

Frances Molin paced the Lady Patrollers with 12 points. PNP’s resistance at the net was futile with 0 blocks in 36 attempts.
