PSL: AirAsia volleybelles get welcome break

MANILA, Philippines — Officials of AirAsia are saddened by the destruction wrought by Typhoon “Glenda” but managed to see a silver lining in this particular storm cloud.

The typhoon forced a postponement yesterday of its semifinal encounter against formidable Generika-Army in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference women’s volleyball tournament.

The unexpected break gave the the Flying Spikers an extended period of preparation against the top semifinal qualifiers.

AirAsia top executive Erick Arejola admitted that beating a former champion like Generika-Army is a tall order for his neophyte team.

“But we have a complete team, a younger team which has the potential of winning the title,” added Arejola.

Indeed, the Flying Spikers bucked a see-saw campaign to oust veteran squad Cagayan Valley to reach the Final Four.

After dropping the first two sets, AirAsia unleashed a mighty rally to score a stunning 16-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-17, 15-13 victory.

“The way they recovered from a 0-2 hole against Cagayan was a testament of their desire to go all the way,” said Arejola.

AirAsia coach Ramil de Jesus said they can use a few more days to map up a plan to stop a well-oiled machine like Generika-Army.

The  suspended match along with the other semifinal duel pitting RC Cola-Air Force against PLDT Home TVolution will be played this Sunday.
