Eric Olivarez Jr., barged into the boys’ singles second round while also making the boys’ doubles quarterfinals Wednesday in the ITF-Ho Chi Minh City junior tennis championships in Vietnam.
Olivarez, 16, downed local bet Quang Nguyen Mau Vinh, 6-4, 6-3, to advance in the Grade 5 event.
Olivarez will take on seventh seed and his doubles partner Sahil Deshmukh of India in the next round. The Indian beat Thai Charles Roberts, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Olivarez and Dehsmukh made it to the quarters after thrashing Warit Boonrat and Ratana Tripoj of Thailand, 6-3, 6-1. They will next face Hong Kong’s Alan Lee Wai Leuk and Alan Sou Ming Chun.
Sixteen-year-old Maia Bernadette Balce teamed up with Shavita Aulana of Indonesia to beat Chery Kim of South Korea and Novela Rezha of Indonesia, 6-2, 6-1 in girls’ doubles. Marc Anthony Reyes
