FILIPINO-AMERICAN Rico Hoey bested two foes in succession on Thursday (Friday in Manila) to gain the quarterfinal round of the final edition of the US Amateur Public Links Championship.
The 18-year-old, one of the heroes for the Philippines in snapping a 17-year Putra Cup drought last year, was taken to 20 holes by Scott Wolfes in the round-of-32 match before whipping Matt Record, 3 and 2, in the afternoon.
Hoey will next battle Houston’s Jess Bonneau, who beat Joshua Baskins, 4 and 3, last 16.
John Oda and Doug Ghim, who shared low medal honors with Hoey in classification play, duel in another pairing. Musong R. Castillo
