Eric Olivarez Jr. bowed out in the boys’ singles quarterfinals but found consolation by barging into the doubles finals in tandem with Sahil Deshmukh of India Friday in the ITF-Ho Chi Minh City junior tennis championships in Vietnam.
Olivarez lost to Suphawit Sae-Oui of Thailand, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, ending his run in the Grade 5 event where the 16-year-old Filipino was looking to make a breakthrough semifinal stint.
But Olivarez and Deshmukh progressed to the doubles finals after a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) stunner over top seeds Aryan Goveas and Achad Imam Maruf.
They go up against second seeds Jirat Navasirisonboon and Suthinan Tanthaseraneewat who bested Charles Roberts and Sae-Oui, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
In girls’ action, Maia Bernadette Balce and Shavita Aulana lost to Pichayatida Jandaeng and Napharat Swangkaew, 6-4, 6-1.
