Tabuena 3 shots off Taifong Open lead

CHANG HWA, Chinese Taipei—Miguel Tabuena kept his place in the top 10 of the $160,000 Taifong Open by firing a 1-under-par 71 Saturday even as the celebrated Angelo Que missed the cut going into the final round of the richest leg on the Asian Development Tour this year.

The 19-year-old Tabuena,  who turned pro in 2011 a year after bagging the silver medal in golf in the Asian Games, was in a four-way tie for sixth place at 141, three strokes behind new leader Hsieh Tung-shu of Chinese Taipei.

Hsieh rallied with a 66 to grab the lead  in the weather-disrupted tournament that has been reduced to 54 holes.

Que, the three-time Asian Tour winner mired in a deep slump this year, started pretty well with an even par 72, then struggled with a 78 to miss the cut by two strokes with his 36-hole aggregate of 150. Also missing the cut was Rufino Bayron, who matched Que’s total with two 75s.

Jay Bayron rallied with a 69 to join a two-way deadlock for 10th place at 142, just four strokes off the lead.

Mars Pucay, the fifth Filipino in the field, carded another 73 for 146.

Hsieh was two shots clear of Aussie Davis Lutterus (68), Thais Pijit Petchkasem (68) and Piya Swangarunporn (69) and Choo Tze Huang of Singapore (72).

Tied with Tabuena were Lin Weng-tang (66) and Sung Mao-chang (68) of Chinese Taipei and Thailand’s Rattanon Wannasrichan (70). Asian Tour News
