Torres’ make-or-break Asiad qualifying jump set
MANILA, Philippines — Two-time Olympian Marestella Torres gets a final chance to pass the Asian Games qualifying criteria in a test jump this Sunday at the Philsports track and field oval.
The former Asian long jump champion should hurdle the Asiad qualifying standard of 6.37 meters which she missed during a recent Ho Chi Minh meet in Vietnam where she did 6.14 while placing second to Vietnamese ace Bui Thi Thu Thao, who cleared 6.46.
“She still remains our best hope for a medal in the Asian Games,” said athletics chief Philip Ella Juico of Torres, who was reportedly hampered by a urinary tract infection in Vietnam.
